Homework

Learning takes place inside and outside the classroom. One of our key assessment principles to support pupils is that “Homework must be planned, purposeful, clear and meaningful.”

For Key Stage Three and Key Stage Four homework tasks are set using Class Charts and for Key Stage Five Microsoft teams.

Homework is usually given a one week deadline unless it is an extended project. Submission of homework can be viewed on the Class Charts parent app.  The parent app can be downloaded from your app store via your phone.  You will need a parent code to login which can be gained from emailing Mr Mulloy smulloy@theroyal.school.

Century

  • The Century.Tech platform is used for all homework for KS3 and KS4 in English, maths and science.  Geography, PE and functional skills are available for KS4.
  • Usually 2-3 nuggets should be set each week.  More nuggets can be set over a longer period of time e.g. for completion during school holidays.
  • Pupils login to Century using their Microsoft 365 school account.

Key Stage Three

  • English, maths and science should be set Century homework assignments weekly.
  • Pupils in KS3 will be set one humanity project and one creative project per learning cycle.
  • Each learning cycle lasts for seven school weeks.

Key Stage Four

  • English, maths and science should be set Century homework assignments weekly and additional exam questions and tasks can be set.
  • Options subjects should set a weekly homework.

Key Stage Five

  • All subjects publish an Independent Study Sheet (for each topic) or 2 per half term, whichever is greater.  This is uploaded to the subject Independent Study Hub (SharePoint), which will be linked to each pupil's class team.
  • All homework tasks are set as an assignment on MS Teams.
  • This should include 5 hours of tasks, which relate to learning carried out in class. This should be set after every lesson, with each task to take approximately 1 hour.
  • All work should be submitted electronically (even if this is a photo) using the assignment function on Teams. Physical submissions may also be required.
  • Teachers are to check completion of all tasks and to assign a mark based upon the following guidance:
    • 2 points – Work is all complete and meets or exceeds the standard expected.
    • 1 point – Work is complete but is either partially complete or does not meet the expected standard.
    • 0 points – Work is either missing or not achieving the expected standard.
  • Homework tasks should be reviewed and returned to students within 1 week.
  • Work that is missing should be ‘Returned for Revision’, with a mark of 0. Students are then expected to resubmit that work.

Length of homework

The following guidance should be expected for homework tasks:

  • KS3 – 20 minutes per week per subject or an extended project per learning cycle lasting 2.5 hours.
  • KS4 – 30-45 minutes per week per subject
  • KS5 – 5 hours of independent work per subject.
