The House System

Every pupil at The Royal from Reception to Sixth Form belongs to a 'House', including staff. Pupils in the senior school and sixth form are sorted into vertical house tutor groups. Pupils proudly display their house badges on their blazer lapel and wear reversible PE tops in house colours helping to distinguish the different teams, ideal for sporting competitions. Weekly house meetings take place for pupils in Year 1 and above.

There are 4 houses, all named after Royal residencies:

  • Balmoral
  • Buckingham
  • Sandringham
  • Windsor
House Captains - Primary

In the primary school, Year 6 pupils take on the roles of House Captains and Vice-House Captains. These roles are voted for by their peers at the start of the academic year. The role of the House Captains is to help organise and lead various house competitions, culminating in the presentation of House Cups on Prize day.

House Captains - Senior

Each year, the School’s Head Boy and Head Girl are appointed by staff from the Upper Sixth, and House Captains and Deputies are elected for each of the School’s four houses.

House Captains take responsibility for the leadership and organisation of their house throughout the forthcoming academic year. The role involves chairing house meetings, delivering assemblies, keeping the house noticeboard up-to-date, organising teams for all events and motivating and mentoring younger members of their house.

Inter-House Competitions

Throughout the year, a variety of academic and sporting house competitions take place. This friendly rivalry encourages a sense of fun and team spirit. Students gain house points for their conduct and classwork which contributes to the weekly house totals and results are announced in assembly and the school newsletter.

House competitions include:

  • General Knowledge
  • Public Speaking
