Squads

The Royal offers a clear, structured pathway for swimmers who are ready to pursue their potential — from those just stepping into performance swimming, through to athletes preparing for national and international competition.

Programme Overview

Our programme is deliberately kept small. That's a conscious decision — not a limitation. Small squads mean every swimmer is known, coached as an individual, and supported by coaches who understand exactly where they are and where they're going.

Swimmers join The Royal either as students at The Royal School Wolverhampton or through our club-linked pathway, which is open to talented swimmers from local clubs who are ready for a more structured performance environment. Whichever route you take, you join the same programme, train alongside the same teammates, and receive the same standard of coaching.

Squads

Academy

Typically Years 7–8 | Up to 9 hours swimming per week plus land training

Academy is where performance habits begin. Swimmers in this squad focus on building strong technical foundations across all four strokes, developing the movement quality, routine, and competitive experience that underpins everything that follows. The emphasis is on enjoyment, consistency, and learning to train — not just to race.

Development

Typically Years 8–9 | Up to 10 hours swimming per week plus land training

Development swimmers are building on those foundations — refining their technique, increasing their training load, and beginning to take ownership of their swimming. Race strategy, pace awareness, and aerobic fitness become a growing focus, alongside the first conversations about individual strengths and future direction.

Performance

Typically Years 9–11 | Up to 11 hours swimming per week plus land training

The Performance squad is where training becomes more demanding and more individualised. Swimmers work at higher volume and intensity, with greater focus on event-specific preparation, lifestyle, recovery, and performance mindset. Individual goal setting and detailed feedback become a central part of the coaching relationship.

Elite

Typically Years 11–13 | Up to 17 hours swimming per week plus gym sessions

Elite is the pinnacle of the RSW pathway — a fully individualised programme preparing swimmers for national and international competition. Training is built around target events, with advanced technical, tactical, and physiological preparation. Swimmers in this squad are preparing not just for their next race, but for whatever comes after The Royal — national centres, elite university programmes, and beyond.

Beyond The Royal

Our pathway doesn't end at The Royal. We prepare every swimmer for what comes next — whether that's progression to an Aquatics GB National Centre, a place at a leading UK university programme, or a full scholarship at an NCAA Division I institution in the United States. The goal is always the same: to send swimmers out better prepared, more confident, and ready for the next stage of their career.
