World Book Day 2026

What a wonderful day celebrating reading! At the senior school we had a fantastic time, with both students and staff dressing up as their favourite literary characters. We saw everything from Spiderman swinging through Computing lessons to the marvellous characters from The Wizard of Oz travelling down the yellow brick road. The English corridor even turned into a bit of a swamp thanks to an appearance from Shrek! We also spotted the Queen of Hearts, the Phantom of the Opera, Fantastic Mr Fox, the Minions, Miss Trunchbull and Matilda, Hagrid, Lord Farquaad and many more, with students being transported to all sorts of magical literary worlds.

Students fully immersed themselves in a range of World Book Day activities throughout the day. Our Year 7s enjoyed a day off timetable to focus on creating their own magical fantasy stories, giving them the chance to develop their creativity and storytelling skills. Alongside this, the whole school took part in a World Book Day treasure hunt, which saw students eagerly searching around the school for clues. KS3 students also took part in a creative writing lesson inspired by our school’s history in preparation for Founders’ Day, encouraging them to think imaginatively about the stories and traditions that shape our school community. There were so many opportunities for students to get involved and celebrate the joy of reading and writing together.

One particularly memorable moment came during the Year 7 creative writing lesson led by Mr Hall. To help bring the students’ ideas to life, he used AI to generate images of the characters and worlds they were creating in their stories. Seeing their ideas visualised in real time sparked excitement across the classroom and helped students develop their characters and settings in even more detail. It was a fantastic way of combining creativity and technology, and it really helped students feel immersed in the magical worlds they were designing.

Our fantastic catering team also went above and beyond to add to the celebrations, transforming the canteen into a whimsical Harry Potter–inspired setting. From Golden Snitch cake pops to basilisk inspired tomato pasta, the menu added an extra touch of magic to the day. It was lovely to see students and staff alike enjoying the atmosphere and embracing the sense of fun that World Book Day brings.

A huge thank you to all the students and staff who took part and went the extra mile to make the day so special, helping to remind us all of the magic and importance of reading.
