Art

Art

The atmosphere within the Art Department is one of industry and activity with well motivated pupils creating inspiring artwork in a wide variety of media.

Alongside Art and Design the department also offers Textiles as a separate discipline from year 10 onwards. This has become an increasingly successful and important aspect of the department.

The department consistently achieves strong results and is rightly proud of the talents and commitment displayed by its pupils.

Art and Design is equipped with three main teaching areas. The large classroom is where the majority of the teaching takes place. Years 7 to 9 are taught in this area.

The two smaller classrooms are generally used for Sixth Form classes and often by GCSE pupils. We have a photographic darkroom that compliments and extends the digital photography work that takes place within the ICT Suite. The department is also equipped with a pottery kiln and a much used etching press for printmakers. Perhaps what characterises the Art department above everything else is the industrious atmosphere. Many of the sixth form pupils attend extra classes during free periods and a sense of pupil ownership is developed.

Extra curricular activities play an important role within the department. Recent and current activities include a short course in GCSE Photography, a hugely popular animation activity, Printmaking, Textiles and Pottery.

A career within the Arts

Many of our students progress onto the prestigious St Martin’s School of Art and Design, whose alumni include the likes of Stella McCartney, John Galliano and Jean Paul Gaultier. Architecture courses are also very popular with our pupils, with pupils successfully gaining places to study this discipline more or less every year.
