Admissions
At all entry points the intention is to assess through age-appropriate means whether the child would benefit from an education at the Royal Wolverhampton School and whether the child will contribute positively to the school community. Where appropriate, school reports will also be sought to augment the assessment methods used by the School.
Entry to the Nursery (from age 2 years):
Potential entrants are invited to spend a period of approximately one hour at the Nursery. The child is involved in Nursery activities and an assessment made, through observation and professional judgment, whether the child will benefit from attendance at the Nursery.
Entry to Pre-Prep:
Potential pupils are invited to spend a day at the Pre-Prep, during which they sit a range of assessments, usually including NFER Mathematics and spelling tests with a short piece of creative writing.
Entry to the Junior School:
Potential pupils are invited to School to sit a range of assessments including NFER mathematics, spelling tests, reading test and a creative writing exercise.
Entry to the Senior School at the age of 11:
By way of entrance examination held in November and January/February each year. Students are tested in Mathematics, English, Verbal Reasoning and non-Verbal Reasoning
Entry at age 12 - 15:
Also by exam and an interview with the Headmaster or Deputy Head.
For entry into the Sixth Form:
Students are required to obtain 5 GCSE passes at Grade C or above.
For overseas students from the age of 11 to 18 unable to attend for examination or without GCSE grades, we request a copy of their most recent reports so that we can assess their ability. If coming from Hong Kong for the Sixth Form, we look at their HKCEE (equivalent to our GCSE). If we are uncertain whether a candidate is suitable or require further information, we sometimes require candidates to sit written examinations (usually in Mathematics, English or the Sciences), overseen by the agent or their current school.
The "pass mark" for entry at Junior or in the lower years of Senior School is not fixed, but usually candidates are admitted if they are in the top 55/60% of the ability range. Cases are assessed on an individual basis, however, and areas of particular strength/weakness will be taken into consideration when making an admissions decision. If there is likely to be a need for SEN provision, our SENCO will assess the candidate in order to determine whether our provision will satisfy the pupils needs before we reach a decision. Likewise, if a potential pupil has a disability, we will assess whether the candidates needs can, realistically and reasonably, be met before we make a decision. Making such a decision will involve consultation of our Accessibility Plan.
